A Henna tattoo is a non permanent tattoo which is traditionally applied in eastern cultures, especially in India, and certain middle eastern countries to mark joyous or monumental occasions such as particular festivals and marriage. The henna tattoo has been popularised in many counties outside of India and the Middle East and it is now common to see many henna parlors and henna artists across the world.

It is made by crushing the leaves and twigs of a henna plant, and mixing it with water and natural oils to create a paste.

Henna Tattoo- Application, Duration And Color

Once the henna paste is made it is filled inside a plastic cone which has a minute opening at its end. The henna tattoo Is then drawn onto the skin by squeezing the cone allowing the henna paste to come though. Once the henna tattoo has been applied, lemon water will be sprinkled on to it and then it must be left for at least 12 hours so that the color of the henna really comes through. It can be washed off a lot sooner but then the color may be quite weak. The darkest color that henna can have is a deep maroon and the lightest shade is a light orange.

A henna tattoo can last between 7- 14 days.

Is A Henna Tattoo Safe?

A henna tattoo is completely safe, as there are no artificial colors or substances contained within it. Recently black henna tattoo have become popularized however this is not entirely safe as the black color is produced generally by adding products which are used to dye hair and not safe to use on the skin. So be aware of this.

Henna Tattoo Vs. A Permanent Tattoo

With a traditional tattoo, that is one that uses ink and penetrates the skin using needles, this is permanent. With these tattoos there is a lot of scope for creating a variety of subjects. From the most intricate to the most extravagant as needles allow for a great deal of precision whereas with a henna tattoo such levels of detail will not be possible. Also with a traditional permanent tattoo, you can use a variety of colors giving more depth and meaning to your subject. Henna colors only range from a dark maroon to a soft orange.

The most obvious advantage that a henna tattoo has is that is non- permanent. So, for people who like the idea of getting a tattoo but don’t know how it would feel having a permanent fixture in the form of a image or writing on their body, a henna tattoo might be a good place to test the waters. Also they can be used to test which area of the body they would want the tattoo. Many a times people have an idea of what it be like to have a particular tattoo on a particular part of the body, but it might not turn out the way they thought it would. Or if you have a stubborn teenager wanting to get a tattoo, a henna tattoo might be a decent compromise or at least it might buy some time!
